His paternal grandparents were Robert (Lord Holand) De Holand and Maud La Zouche; his maternal grandparents were Edmond (1st Earl of Kent) of Woodstock and Margaret (Baroness of Wake) Wake. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Edmond, John (1st Duke of Exeter), Joan, Matilda (Maud) and Maud (Lady). He had a half-brother named Richard Ii King of.
