    Henry was succeeded by his three daughters and co-heiresses, ISABEL, ELIZABETH and BASILIA (Fine and Close Rolls: CPR: Testa de Nevill). They were already married, Isabel to GEOFFREY DE LONGCHAMP, Elizabeth to WILLIAM DE GAMAGES and Basilia to
    PAYN DE BURGHILL. They recur in different contexts arising from the division of their father's estate, notably the advowson of Westbury (Plea Rolls: CPR: Reg. Bishop Ludovic de Charlton). What happened to the Gloucestershire fiefs?

    Foxcote was divided and the Master of the Templars sued the three daughters and their husbands, (the case being heard at Gloucester in 1221 (Curia Regis Roll): Selden Soc. vol 59). In the Feudal Aids of 1284-85 the Curzon family were holding Foxcote of the Templars.

    At Culkerton, Isabel gave her land to St. Oswald's, Gloucester and they sold it in 1231 to St. Mary's, Kingswood (Kingswood). About 1239 Elizabeth released certain land there to Kingswood: and in the Feudal Aids of 1303, they were holding Culkerton of the Earl of Hereford.

    The manor and advowson of Westbury on Severn were divided (Fine and Close Rolls: PQW). Isabel sold her share to Henry de Bathe. Elizabeth's share went to her son Matthew de Gamages, who passed it to his brother Nicholas. Basilia enfeoffed her younger son Henry de Burghill in her share of the manor but gave her share in the advowson to the Bishop of Hereford. Henry de Burghill died without issue in 1271 and was succeeded by his elder brother Roger (Fine Roll; Chanc. Inq.p.m.).

    The same division occurred at Burghill. But Isabel de Longchamp sold her share to her nephew Roger de Burghill, while Elizabeth de Gamages and Basilia de Burghill retained theirs (Testa de Nevill). The descent of the one-third de Gamages share can be traced through the de Penbrugges to the Oldcastles, and so to the Hackluyts. The two-thirds de Burghill share descended through the Eylesfords to the Milbornes. The cadet line of the family which we trace in the next chapter will be found to be under-tenants in the de Gamages share of the manor. At his death in 1528 Richard Mynors of Treago was holding land in Burghill of John Hackluyt (Inq.p.m.).

    HENRY DE MINERS first appears on the Pipe Roll for Herefordshire 1178-80, when Moses the Jew has judgment against him. In 1200 he was due to appear, with Roger of Westbury and others, as witnesses in a suit between Robert of Slipton and Baderon of Blaisdon, but was excused (Curia Regis Roll). In John's reign he gave half a weir in the Severn called Hynewere to the Abbot of Flaxley, the repair of which was later in dispute (Inq. 26 Mar 1270 in Cal. Inq. Misc.; CPR Flaxley Cartulary). He also gave land to the Abbey in memory of his father and his brother (not named), Walter Map and Baderon of Blaisdon being among the witnesses. He recurs as a witness in the Flaxley Cartulary.

    Across the Severn, Henry confirmed a grant of land at Hatherley to the infirmary at Winchcomb c. 1200 (Landboc of Winchcomb). In 1204 Roger de Bohun had suit against Henry concerning land at Culkerton (Curia Regis Roll). In 1208/9 Adam Curzon was holding 3 hides in Foxcote of Henry de Miners, and Henry of the Bishop of Worcester (RBW: Testa de Nevill). Not long afterwards Henry gave this land to the Templars for in 1214 the Master summoned him to warrant the land to him. Henry pleaded that he himself had never been fully seised of all the land in question (Curia Regis Roll). In the same year Richard of Bagendon had suit against him concerning the advowson of Bagendon (ib).

    In Herefordshire Henry witnessed a sale of land at Breinton to the Cathedral in 1201-03 (Chapter). He paid the aid for the expedition to Ireland in 1210 (Pipe Roll) and in 1211-12 he was holding half a knight's fee of the honour of Brecknock, doubtless in Burghill (RBE). He married AGNES, for her dower was protected when seisin of Westbury on Severn was granted to his heirs (Close Roll). She afterwards married ROGER DE LEYBURN who died 1242-43, and in 1252 she was still holding one-third of the land in Burghill by virtue of her previous marriage (Testa de Nevill). Henry died in 1217 (Close Roll).

    It seems likely that Roger's tenure was not very long, for he does not occur again: and he was succeeded at Westbury on Severn by his son WILLIAM DE MINERS. This was the William de Miners named as tenant of Burghill, rated at 8 hides, in the Balliol College copy of the Herefordshire Domesday, which has been dated c. 1160-70, and in the Testa de Nevill. The descent of Westbury on Severn taken here from Placita Quo Warranto is identical with that of Burghill in Testa de Nevill. This is the earliest reference discovered to the name at Burghill, but affords no clue to how long the tenure had persisted. Burghill was held as of the honour of Brecknock, under the successors of Miles of Gloucester: and, if hidage is a fair measure, appears to have been more substantial than either Foxcote or Eycot.

    William witnessed a confirmation by Roger of Hereford (d. 1155), eldest son of Miles of Gloucester, of a gift made to Brecon Priory when Gilbert Foliot was Bishop of Hereford (1148 -54) (Arch. Camb. 4th series, 14). He also witnessed two charters of Maihel of Hereford, Roger's younger brother and successor. The first was a gift to Brecon Priory, another witness being Roger dapifer of Burghill: the second a grant to St. Davids of lands which Miles of Gloucester had held in fee of St. Davids (Mon Angi III, CPR 1352/53.

    There are several references to William in the Pipe Rolls for Gloucestershire. Mentioned in 1161-62, in 1169-70 he had £10 to fortify the castle of Striguil (Chepstow). In 1175-76 he had the custody of Hatherly, with the daughter of Roger de Troilli. In the same year his men Simon and Walter owed ½ mark on his behalf for a forest fine in Herefordshire which remained unpaid in the six following years. William made a substantial grant of land to the Cistercian abbey of Flaxley in the Forest of Dean, founded in 1151, the witnesses including his son Henry. Roger of Westbury and Baderon of Blaisdon, but the grant is not dated (Flaxley Cartulary).

    William de Miners died probably about 1200, On evidence as late as 1364. it was in John's reign that he presented Walter Map to the living of Westbury (Reg. Of Bishop Ludovic de Charlton). Nevertheless in the Forest Pleas for Gloucestershire on the Pipe Roll for Michaelmas 1190 it was his son Henry who paid ½ mark for a purpresture (illegal enclosure or encroachment) perhaps at Westbury. In 1201 Henry owed 5 marks for enclosing in order to make a park next his house in Westbury (Oblate Roll). These references suggest that Henry was seised at least of Westbury before 1200. They also recall the enclosure at Burghill known as Minors Park (OS 1" map 152,480457),

    Gilbert was succeeded at Foxcote and at Eycot by ROGER DE MINERS (RBW). This is the Roger to whom Henry II (1154-89) granted the manor and advowson of Westbury on Severn for the service of a hawk or xxs, yearly (PQW 1287/8) because early in the thirteenth century his grandson Henry was seised both of Foxcote and of Westbury on Severn.

It seems likely that Roger's tenure was not very long, for he does not occur again.

    In 1131/2 Gilbert accounted for the pleas of Miles of Gloucester and of Payn fitzjohn, whose daughter Cecily was to marry Roger, the eldest son and heir of Miles, in or before May 1138 (Pipe Roll). In the return of 1166, Gilbert appears as one of the knights of Margaret de Bohun, eventual heiress of Miles, enfeoffed by her father. He held half a knight's fee, which from subsequent evidence was at Culkerton. He was also returned for one-third of a fee under the Archbishop of York and one fee under the Bishop of Worcester (RBE). When Hamelin was abbot of St. Peter's, Gloucester (1148-79) Gilbert confirmed a grant to St. Peter's of land in Brookthorpe and La Rugge (in Standish) (CPG). These references to Gilbert may be taken, as in the College of Arms pedigree, to refer to two generations of the same name.

    The earliest references to the family begin within a generation of the Conquest, but in Gloucestershire. When Serlo was abbot of St. Peter's, Gloucester (1072-1104) GILBERT DE MINERS was holding Foxcote, under Withington and rated at 3 hides, of the Bishop of Worcester, and confirmed a grant there to St. Peter's. In the time of Bishop Teulphus (1115-25) Gilbert also held of the Bishop of Worcester 4 hides at Eycot in Rendcomb, under Bibury, (RBW, RBE).

    In 1127, in a suit in the King's court between the monks of Gloucester and GILBERT DE MINERS, Henry I confirmed the grant to St. Peter's of the manor of Coln St. Andrew or Clone Rogers, made by the Roger of Gloucester who died at Falaise c. 1106. (CPG, William of Malmesbury's Gesta Regum).
