Ralph
Basset
The Complete Peerage does not have this Ralph in its ancestry. They claim that the Ralph, b. 1329, married as his 1st wife, abt1346, Sybil Astley, daughter of Giles Astley, who d. 1316. Atbest you would have a 17 year old boy marrying a 30+ (mostlikely 35-40) year old woman; not very likely at all. ThereforeI envision two generations where CP has one. I believe that thisRalph m. (long before 1346, which is when CP says the marriagetook place) Sybil Astley and had the Ralph who was a minor in1349. Of course Ralph could have been born as early as 1310, marriedSybil for the 1st time at age 36 (1346) and married again at 51(1361) and had children. I think that genealogy, even the wellrespected sources, are too full of really old men havingchildren. It seems to be the rule rather than the exception. Theaverage life expectancy in the middle ages was in the mid tolower 40's which was considered old age. While men can havechildren in their 80's, I think it is the exception rather thanthe rule for men after the age of 50 having children.

[CompletePeerage III:374, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)] --------------------------- Margaret (or Margery) de Braose, died shortly before 12 May1335; married Sir Roger de Coleville, Knight, born c1251, aged26 in 1277, died shortly before 6 Mar 1287/8, Lord of Bytham, coLincoln, son of Walter de Coleville, Lord of Bytham, co Lincoln, died 1277, by Isabel or Elizabeth. [Magna Charta Sureties] Note: Neither Ancestral Roots, CP, or MCS mention a secondmarriage for Margaret, but Roger's death in 1288 would certainlyallow for a 2nd marriage.

ROGER DE COLEVILLE, son and heir, aged 26 at his father's death. On 28 June 1283 he was summoned, by writ directed Rogero deColevilla de Byham, to attend the King at Shrewsbury, but thisdoes not seem to have been a summons to Parliament. He married Margaret, daughter of Sir Richard DE BREWES, ofStinton, Norfolk, by Alice, daughter and heir of William Le Rus,of Stinton. He died 1287/8, before 6 March, date of writ forInq. p. m. He [Walter de Coleville] married Isabel or Elizabeth (e). Hedied 1277, before 2 September, when the writ for his Ing. p. m.is dated. [Complete Peerage III:374, (transcribed by DaveUtzinger)] (e) Aubourn, Counthorpe, and other of his manors, co. Lincoln, were committed, 25 Oct 1265, to Isabel late (sic) the wife ofWalter de Coleville; where also, 20 Feb 1265/6, is a grant oflands in Aubourn to Elizabeth, wife of Walter de Colveville, theKing's enemy who is in prison. Elizabeth and Isabel are hermerely different forms of the same name, and the word 'late' inthe first passage is an error. V.G. ------------------------- Most people have Isabel born in Muston, Lancashire.Unfortunately I find no record of a Muston in that county. Thereis a Muston in Leicestershire & East Riding Yorkshire. Of theseI believe that the Muston in Leicestershire is closest, althoughit is near Nottingham, not Lancashire.

He [Ralph Basset] married 1stly, Elizabeth, 1st daughter and inher issue coheir of Roger COLVILL, [LORD COLVILL] by Margaret, daughter of Sir Richard BREWES. [Complete Peerage II:7,(transcribed by Dave Utzinger)] Note: With her mother Margaret the daughter of a 'bef 9 Sep1265' marriage and her son 'b. bef 1295' when Elizabeth waspresumably dead and Ralph was marrying for the 2nd time, thereis not a lot of room for variation in the birth dates of thethree inidividuals: (1) 1265 for Margaret, which is the earliestpossible given the marriage date; (2) 1280 for Elizabeth, whichsplits the difference and has two women in a row bearingchildren at the age of 15; (3) abt 1295 for the son Simon, whichis the latest possible. It also means that poor Elizabeth had avery short life; I would guess that she probably died in childbirth having her son Simon.

He took part in Simon de -Montfort's rebellion, and was summoned to Parliament 24 December 1264, by writdirected Waltero de Colevilla, which writ however, having issuedin rebellion, should not create a peerage dignity. He was takenprisoner at Kenilworth in 1264, by Prince Edward, and his landsforfeited, but they were redeemed, and he was possessed of themat his death. He married Isabel or Elizabeth (e).
