In 1400, on some unknown occasion, hehad been made prisoner by the Scots. In February 1402/3 he wasappointed by the Bishop of Durham constable of Norham Castle,and justice, seneschal, sheriff and escheator in Norhamshire andIslandshire for 7 years; and in September for life. He had theKing's writ for livery of his inheritance, 3, and livery 12 May1410, being then a knight (d1). In May 1410 he was one of thecommissioners to treat of a truce with Scotland, and in Julycommissioner of array in Northumberland. Sheriff ofNorthumberland, 1417-18, and Knight of the Shire, 1419-21, 1425and 1435- In 1419 he recaptured Wark from William de Haliburton.In 1422 and succeeding years he was a commissioner of the peace.He was lieutenant of the Duke of Bedford as captain of BerwickCastle in 1423; and in the following year one of the escortappointed to conduct the King of Scots from Durham to Scotland.From 1425 to 1435 he was warden of Roxburgh Castle; in 1426 wasone of the commissioners in Northumberland to arrange ashort-term loan to the King; and in 1435 sheriff of Hexhamshire.He married, on or before 21 May 1399, Maud, daughter of ThomasGREY, lord of Wark. (d1) He had, upon his father's death, violently contested thepossession of Bothal with his younger brother John. The Commonspresented a petition on behalf of John in the Parliament thatmet in Jan 1490/10, setting forth that at midnight on the dayafter their father's death Robert came to Bothal with 200men-at-arms, some of whom were hired men, and some 'even Scots'and enemies of the King, and besieged the castle with 'escales,pavises, hurdises et autres orinances de guerre,' till after 4days' siege John was obliged to surrender. Robert remained inpossession, and the Commons prayed that the matter should bereferred to the Council--'considerantz qe les ditz Chastell &Manoir sont sy pres le Est-Marche d'Escoce, qe sufficeantremedie au dit suppliant par cours de la Commune Ley illoeqes nepoet estre fait.' Robert was summoned to answer before theCouncil, and must have made his peace before the issue of hiswrit of livery.

(d2) He had issue: younger sons John and William, and a daughterMargery, m. to Robert, son and heir of Rober Harbottle, Esq.

(e) When her son Robert granted a reversion after her death tohis brother William. She was probably still alive in 1453/4,when Maud Ogle, widow, paid tithes of Newbigging, in Norham.

Note: Maybe somebody can't do simple arithmetic, but I get1379-83 when I compute Robert's birth year from the informationin CP. AR and MCS (who say 1369-73) also refer to a publicationby Clay on the Extinct Peerages of the Northern Counties ofEngland, so maybe he overrode CP. I think I will stick with CPuntil I find different.
 1353 - 1410 Robert de Ogle 56 56 SIR ROBERT DE OGLE, knight, grandson and heir, being son andheir of Robert DE OGLE and Ellen BERTRAM, was born at Callerton,and baptised at Ponteland, 8 December 1353. Having sued hismother in Chancery in 1373 for his maintenance for 5 years, heproved his age in 1374, and had a writ of livery of the lands ofhis paternal grandfather and grandmother 4 February 1374/5. InJanuary 1375/6 he had licence for divine service in the oratoryin the chapel near Ogle Castle. He served under Sir Thomas deFelton in the expedition to Brittany in 1380, and was knightedbefore 12 March 1385/6. He took part in the battle of Otterburnin August 1388, and was appointed on various commissions inNorthumberland in 1392. In 1393 he indented as Keeper of Berwickand the East March, 30 April to May. With his wife Joan he hadan indult, December 1396, for a portable altar, and in February1397/8 was chief commissioner to audit the accounts of theofficials of Waldby, late Archbishop of York, who died deeply indebt to the King. He was one of six summoned from Northumberlandto attend the King in Council at Westminster on 16 August 1401.He married, before 6 September 1372, Joan, 3rd daughter andcoheir of Sir Alan DE HETON. (j) Writ dated 8 Nov 1409; inquisition made 17 Apr following. Onthe other hand, his M.I. at Hexham; and--depicting the arms--andhis will, dated there 7 Feb '1410', respectively show his deathin 1410 and 1411, modern style. He desired to be buried atWhalton, but was actually interred at Hexham. He had youngersons: (i) John, upon whom, taking the name of Bertram, Bothalwas settled by his grandmother, and, after her death, by hisfather, Feb 1405/6; (ii) Alexander, upon whom his father andmother settled the Hepple inheritance. Alexander predeceased hismother (dspm). Robert made a settlement on his daughters Margeryand Elizabeth as early as 29 Sep 1374. A daughter calledMargaret (query the said Margery) m. Robert, son of Nicholas deRaymes. 1331 - 1355 Robert de Ogle 24 24 ROBERT DE OGLE, son and heir apparent by 1st wife. As 'donsel'of the diocese of Durham he had licence to choose a confessor,August 1349. In August 1351 he was attorney for his father totake seisin of Thirnham. He married Ellen, daughter and heir ofSir Robert BERTRAM, of Bothal, chivaler, by his 1st wife,Margaret (living in May 1341), daughter and coheir of Constance,wife of William DE FELTON (f). He died v.p., being slain in theattack on Berwick, November 1355. His widow married, 2ndly,before 25 October 1364, John DE HATFIELD, citizen and peppererof London, who was living in 1368, and died before 15 May 1373.She married, 3rdly, before 28 June 1377, David DE HOLGRAVE,sometime the King's esquire (k).
