Early History of St. Margaret's Church 1692-1792 The Hammond family would also playa role in the support of the church a nd in the politics of the area. John Hammond, an ardent member of the Chur ch of England, wrote, in 1655, the influential pamphlet Leah and Rachel, o r, The Two Fruitful Sisters Virginia and Maryland, which argued for religi ous peace between the colonies. He settled on the Severn and became a memb er of the Provincial Court, and later, a delegate to the Lower House. H is son, Colonel Charles Hammond, became Treasurer of the Western Shore.
