Tradition says he was born about 1610 in Sweden. He was in Boston in 1634, a vinter, servant to Richard Bellingham. In 1651 he sold his inn called "King's Arms" and brewhouse and moved to Kittery, Maine where he kept an ordinary in 1652. He was deputy to General Court and Associate Judge of the Court of Common Pleas. Came to America a single man in the company of Scammons, Frost, Bryar and Raynes before 1631. First settled at Dover Neck, New Hampshire in 1634. Bellingham came from Boston, England. Hugh was made freeman 25 May 1636. Land grant 9 Jan 1637 for Hugh, wife and child. In 1642 opened an ordinary with a cooke's shop. In 1646 member of artillery company. Sold King's Arms for 600 pounds which was located on State & Exchange Streets. In 1651 moved to Kittery, Maine and was licensed for an ordinary. In 1656 with others he petitioned Oliver Cromwell for relief from Royal Exactions. November 4, 1718, Richard, son of Lewis Tucker, took out letters of Administration, filed bond and inventory on the estate of Hugh Gunnison, late of Kittery, deceased, his grandfather.
