Richard Smith
The first white man to settle on a cove of Narragansett Bay was
Richard Smith. His first tract, "secured on friendly terms," probably with
the assistance of Roger Williams himself, lay just north of the Indian
village of Cocumscussuc. To this wilderness he brought wife, children and
servants, "being courteous to all strangers passing ye way." In 1643/4
when Roger Williams himself built a trading-post, his only neighbor was
Richard Smith, whom he called "hospitable and intelligent:" and for more
than a decade it remained a "lonely situation". Later, Smith made addition-
al purchases until he possessed all of the land between Narragansett Bay on
the east, the Indian Road on the west, the Cove on the north, and the
Annaquatucket River to the south.
