Joseph, known as Cornet Joseph Parsons from the military title conferred on him 7 October 1678 by the General Court of Massachusetts Bay, was a witness on 15 July 1636 to the deed by which the Indians conveyed to William Pynchon and others a large tract of land on both sides of the Connecticut River including what was to become Springfield, Massachusetts. Joseph Parsons does not appear again in Springfield records until 8 January 1645/6 when he was appointed a highway surveyor. He was a founder of Northampton, Massachusetts, in 1654, and a prominent resident there. He lived in Boston from about 1675 to 1677 or 1678, when he returned to Northampton; in 1679 or 1680 he returned to Springfield where he died 9 October 1683.
