William Holton (1611-1691) came from Ipswich, County Suffolk, England in the 'Francis' in 1634 to Cambridge, Mass. with Thomas Hooker's party he went to Hartford, Conn, then returned to England where he remained for three years. Then he joined the colonists at Northampton, Mass in 1654 where he was justice and the first deacon, representative to the General Court in 1664, 1667, 1669 and 1671. He introduced the first motion known in American history for the suppression of intemperance.
