Frances Holmes:
The Early Settlement of Stamford, Connecticut 1641-1700; Jeanne Majdalany 1991: "Fancis Holmes was probably from Yorkshire and came to America about 1635. He was in Stamford by 1648. His home was on the south side of East Street. His son, John, moved to Bedford, New York and held important positions there. His son, Richard, moved to Norwalk. Francis had a servant named Cornelius Hunt."
The History of Stamford, Connecticut; Huntington: "His testimony against Robert Pennoyer in 1648 proves he was in Stamford by that year. Land was granted to him by the town in 1667."
Francis first settled in Massachusetts before moving to Stamford. Tradition says he was from Beverly, Yorkshire, England - this is not proved. He was a blacksmith by trade. Tradition also says that Francis, George of Roxbury, Massachusetts, and David of Dorchester were brothers - this too is not proved.
