Two stories are told of the origin of William and his brother Elijah Burr Georgia. One account claims they were 'shanghied' from their fishing boat by a "British Man-of-War" during the American Revolution and deserted when the vessel anchored at Savannah, Ga. and came north to New Milford. The other story claims that only William came- the son of a wealthy family owning silk mills and vast tracts of farm lands occupied by serfs.
While William's children were yet young, the father, William, became homesick and longed to go back to his native land. His wife naturally objected to leaving her parents and friends to go back to a land that he had been dissatisfied with. He left one day in a fit of temper and they never saw or heard of him again.
Miles Georgia remained in New Milford until he was about 20 and then went to Meredith, NY where he met Sally North whose father David and family had been since 1793. They later moved to Newfield, NY.
