Maturin Ballou: Ballous in America; Adin Ballou; OHS: Buried near his home on the Little Moshassuck River. Co-Proprietor of Rhode Island with Roger Williams. First appears on record 19 Jan 1646 on a land agreement. Accepted as a freeman in 1658 and gained possession of the property. Scribed his name as "Mathurin Bellow". Strong probability that he is a descendant of a Norman Chieftan Guinebond Balou, a marshal (took care of horses - very important position) in the army of William the Conqueror and fought in the battle of Hastings. Maturin died intestate.
