Captain William Daniel, the founder of the Daniel family of Virginia, many members of which have achieved distinction, was born at Wigan, Lancashire, England in 1623. He was a soldier in the royal army during the civil wars, and came to Virginia on the downfall of the monarchy. He was a vestryman of Middlesex parish, Middlesex Co., VA in 1684 and died there in 1698. (Virginia Genealogies, Heyden)
