  The Valentine Peers Collection
    Guide and Inventory

    The Valentine Peers Collection was obtained from Serendipity Books Inc. of Berkeley, California.  The collection includes  papers and documents of a prominent Kentucky family from the Revolutionary War to the Civil War.
  
  Valentine Peers was born in Sisburn, Antrim County, Ireland in 1756 and emigrated to North America in 1773. He entered the Revolutionary Army of Virginia in 1776 and served as a brigade major under the command of General George Weedon.  He served in the Battle of Brandywine, September 11, 1777, and he and his men were commended in the published orders of General George Washington and Major General Nathaniel Greene (see Saffell's Records of the Revolutionary War, pp. 339-343). Valentine Peers was released from service November 19, 1777 as noted in a letter from General Weedon (Box 1, Folder 3, Item 2).  He was granted 5,333 1/3 acres in compensation for commendable military service. Peers then settled in Loudoun County, Virginia but later moved his family to Mason County, Kentucky, where he was among the area's earliest settlers. Throughout his life he was a landlord, manufacturer of salt, cotton mill owner, and manager of other jobs relating to his land, properties, and legal duties.  Peers died June 6th 1830. Peers was married to Eleanor Orr (d. May 28, 1817) and their children were:  Mary Eleanor (m. Judge Lewis Collins), John D., Edward, Valentine J. (Sheriff in Lincoln County, Missouri, 1834-1838), Benjamin O.
  (graduated from Transylvania College, studied at Princeton University, and became President of Transylvania College), Henry P., Jane M. (m. Smith), and Susan E. (m. Garrard).

  1. (folded sheet) Thomas Bodley and James Hughes bound to Valentine Peers and Alfred W. Grayson Esq. Trustees for Col. Alex D. Orr. 10,000 dollars to be paid to them, "their certain attornies [sic] their Psion Aduion Vapigns." June 4th 1804. Valentine Peers and Alfred W. Grayson by virtue of a deed hold a tract of land given by Alex D. Orr. 18,000 acres. 3,000 if which were sold to General Lee. James Hughes appointed as attorney Signed by Tho. Bodley and J Hughes.   2. (Folded small sheet) Valentine Peers sold to Obadiah Ragsdale a piece of land. The land and was within the survey of George Evans. The land is under doubtful title. Bargain for the land is relinquished. As a result a damage payment is expected. Orr binds himself to pay Peers what Ragsdale demands. Orr binds himself with the penalty of 200 dollars. March 24th 1807. Signed by A. D. Orr and witnessed by Stoker Anderson and John Ward.

  3. (Small sheet) George Morton, William Rankin, and William Payne determine that considering the work Obadiah Ragsdale has done that Valentine Peers should pay him 133 dollars. April 13th 1807 Signed by Geo. Morton, Wm Rankin and W Payne.

  6. (Small sheet) Statement of payment listing two amounts paid to Valentine Peers. 143 dollars in 1806 and then 75 dollars in 1809. The 143 dollars was paid on account of the award in favor of Ragsdale.

  1. (Folded Sheet) Valentine Peers executes to Robert Courtney a title Bond for 120 acres of land of his military warrant to 2666 and 2/3 acres in the state of Ohio. Courtney is to pay Peers an amount deemed fair, by a judge, for 150 acres. Signed and witnessed by Winslow Parker jr. And Lewis Collins (signature has been torn loose)

  4. (Single sheet) Valentine Peers gives to R. Courtney 150 acres. 6 dollars per acre. August 4th 1808 witnessed and signed by James [Tinner] Signed by Val. Peers.   Back states that deed was received by Robert Courtney. Witnessed and signed by Winslow Parker jr. And Lewis Collins.
  
  5. (Single Sheet) Valentine Peers bound to R. Courtney in the sum of 120 dollars. To be paid to Courtney. June 5th 1824 Val. Peers gives to R. Courtney 120 acres believed to be in Allen county. Signed and witnessed by Winslow Parker Jr. and Lewis Collins. (Triangle cut from document damaged signature of Valentine Peers.)

  10. (Folded sheet) Unsigned letter. Person received money from Peers and used it to pay creditors and do work, but could not finish. Planned on spending vacation with Peers, but horse is unwell. List of costs including clothes, boarding, tuition, paying the "Taylor" and schoolmaster, washing and bleaching.

  Valentine Peers, who was born in Ireland, entered the Virginia militia, 1776, and was on the staff of Gen. George Weedon at the battle of Brandywine, where the officers and soldiers were complimented by Washington. He was officer of the day, 1777, when the Commander-in-Chief congratulated the army in the Jerseys on the good news from Gates, who had won the battle of Stillwater. For his service in the Revolution he received from Virginia a grant of land. He died at Maysville, Ky., 1830, aged seventy-four.
