Agatha of was born about 1018 in Szekesfehervar, Hungary. Agatha of's father was Istvan and her mother was Gisela Von Bayern. Her paternal grandparents were Geza of Hungary and Sarolt of Hungary; her maternal grandparents were Heinrich II Von Bayern and Gisele of Burgundy. She had a sister named Hedwig. Magna Charta Sureties does not give parents for Agatha. There is a lot of doubt as to who her parents are. I have the "classic" ancestry, but others (including Vajay) say it is Liudolf, Margrave of Westfriesland and Gertrudis, daughter of Hugh IV of Egisheim (whom I name Ludwig von Braunschweig, Count of Derlingau & Gertrude von Egisheim).
Cannon and Griffiths, The Oxford Illustrated History of the British Monarchy, describes her as the niece of Henry II, Emperor of Germany (Holy Roman Emperor). As Henry's sister Gisela married Stephen of Hungary, the ancestry that I have would fit that description. Of course Vajay uses the "niece" datum to portray a different ancestry.
Turton has Agatha "of Germany", as daughter of Bruno of Germany (brother of Emperor Henry II), thus making Agatha his niece.
The parentage of Agatha, wife of Edward "Atheling," has been under serious discussion for several decades. G. Andrews Moriarty, G. 1985, in an article in NEHGR, 106:52-60 (Jan. 1952), explains the two prevailing views---kinship with the Hungarian kings (dau of King Stephen) and kinship with the German Emperors (dau of Ludolph, Margrave of West Friesland). He opted for Stephen, and says so in his Plantagenet Ancestry, p. 31. The great scholar, Szabolcs de Vajay, in Duquesne Review, 7:71-87 (Spring, 1962), makes the very convincing case of Ludolph. I support the "German" view using Detlev Schwennicke's Europäische Stammtafeln (ES, II:78), 1984 research, as one of my sources. [Roderick W.
