"Appears to have been among the Acadian Prisoners of war at Halifax,
August 16, 1763.
Joseph dit '"Officer" was one of the '8' Chiefs who left Halifax, sailed to Haiti and then New Orleans, and finally arrived at the Attakapas Poste (St. Martinville, La) in 1765 led by 'Beausoleil Broussard. He had escaped the first deportation in 1755 by resisting the British on the Petitcoudiac River. A small force of men came out wielding axes, hoes, and hammers as the English torches had reached their church and the town was in flames. In 1756, Joseph arrived in Port St, Jean on the Baie des Chaleurs at the mouth of the Ristagouche River, along with 32 other families. In 1760, 800 Acadians and a small tribe of Indians battled the English in 'Le Combat Naval de Ristagouche. After several months of hardships, the Acadians surrendered and joined other comrades in the prison
at Halifax.
Was one of the 8 Acadian leaders who signed a contract with Antoine Bernard Dauterive to raise cattle on shares in the Attakapas District, April 4, 1765.
Received from New Orleans Merchant Antoine de St. Maxent a receipt for 166 livres in possible redemption by the French Crown (the attempt was evidently unsuccessful).
