Thomas was born on February 24th, 1832 in Belfast, Co. Antrim, Ireland. He died at the age of 86 on February 14th, 1919 in Napa, CA.General Notes

Mr. Bales was kind enough to send me a copy of an autobiography that Thomas wrote for his grandchildren in 1918, at the age of 86 years. He documents his life from his early childhood in and around Belfast, Ireland, his unexpected and challenging voyage to New York, and his enlistment under General William Tecumseh Sherman in the summer of 1864, when he witnessed the burning of Atlanta.

‌Thomas and Elizabeth were married in a religious ceremony on November 25th, 1858 in Rutland, IL. They had a daughter named Anna Isabelle.
