Joscelain was born about 1110 in Louivain, Belgium.  Joscelain's father was Duke Godfrey Barbutus ("the Bearded") de Lorraine I of Brabant and his mother was Clemence de Lombardy of Burgundy.  His paternal grandparents were Duke Henry de Brabant II of Lower Lorraine and Adela von der Betuwe; his maternal grandparents were Count William ("le Grand") I of Burgundy and Etienette de Longwy. He had a sister named "The Fair Maid of Brabant".  He was the younger of the two children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named Godfrey, Adeliza of Louvain and Ida.  He died in 1180 in Nottinghamshire, England.
