General Notes
Eldest son of the 1st Earl of Northumberland. He was nicknamed Hotsput because of the speed with which he copuld attack Scottish raiding parties. He was captured at the Battle of Otterburn in 1388 but won a resounding victory at Hambleton Hill in 1403. Shakespeare's Henry *V opens at Hotspur's castle at Warkworth with the news of the battle. He and his father were largely responsible for Henry IV overthrowing Richared II in 1399 and were known as the kingmakers but whilst in turn trying to over throw Henry, Hotspur was killed at the battle of Shrewsbury in 1403.
