Athelred the Muckle - chief of the Gainas; m. Edburga of the royal house of Mercia; father of Ealswith who m. Alfred the Great. For more than five centuries the Gainas had inhabited the country watered by the Trent and the Idle, when, in 1013, King Swegen of Denmark sailed up the Trent to Gainsborough. (Ethelswida) of the Gaini was born about 0852 in Mercia, England.1 She died on December 5th, 0905 in St Mary's Abby, Winchester, England. She was buried in Winchester Cathedral, London, England.1
