Pepin rulers of the FRANKS. Pepin of Landan (Pepin I), d. 639?, mayor ofthe palace of the Frankish kingdom of Austrasia, forced the succession(629) of Dagobert I as king and established the foundation for theCAROLINGIAN dynasty. His grandson, Pepin of Heristal (Pepin II), d. 714,mayor of the palace (680-714) of Austrasia and Neustria, establishedCarolingian power over the MEROVINGIAN kings by making himself the actualruler of the Franks. He was the father of CHARLES MARTEL and thegrandfather of Pepin the Short (Pepin III), c.714-768, the firstCarolingian king of the Franks (751-68). He overthrew the Merovingiandynasty and had himself crowned king with the support of Pope Zacharias.Pepin defended papal interests and in 754 turned over to the pope whatbecame the foundation of the PAPAL STATES. He was the father ofCHARLEMAGNE.
Pepin "The Short" of and Bertrada of were married in a religious ceremony about 0740. They had eight sons and six daughters, named Charlemagne Emperor of, Carloman II of, Carloman of the, Carloman of, Giles, Gilles of, Pepin of, Pippin, Rothaide of, Adelaide a Nun of, Gertrude of The, Gisele "A Nun" of, Daughter of Pepin III of The and Gisela of.
