William Berry enlisted in the army during the Civil war on February 2
8, 18 62 at Dardenelle, Arkansas. He served with the Confederacy in Compa
ny K, 3 1st Regiment, Arkansas Infantry. Like many other soldiers from Log
an Coun ty who served in the war, William Berry learned that the real dang
ers a nd horrors were to be found more in the home territory than in the b
attlef ields. He was attacked by a slave just before the close of the wa
r. He m et a negro man on a foot log neat Tall Lynn's place on the Delewa
re cree k. The negro man was a run away slave and was afraid that Underwo
od wou ld tell his master, so the negro said "dead men don't tell tales" a
nd stab bed Underwood with a knife and cut him across the stomach. They we
re fight ing in the water and Underwood had the negro almost drowned wh
en he notic ed his own entrails floating in the water. Underwood let the n
egro go a nd gathered up his entrails and walked a half mile to a house. T
hey g ot a Dr from Dardenelle. By that time the entrails were swollen Ba
d, so th ey took a tub of warm water and got the swelling out. The Dr p
ut the entra ils back and sewed him up, and Underwood survived the ordea
l. Howeve r, he lived only a year or two after that, his death on Februa
ry 3,1867 w as caused by these injuries. He was 46 years of age
