Martin Luther Underwood 
Martin Luther was born in 1894.1 Martin Luther's father was James Thomas Underwood and his mother was Amanda Jane Mabry. His paternal grandparents are David Underwood and Sarah Turner; his maternal grandparents were Thomas L. Mabry and Sarah Miranda Graham. He had four brothers and three sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Thomas David, John William, George Thomas, Roy Raven, Minnie Lee, Dora Matilda, Ollie Mae and Curtis Ophelia. Martin, known by his family and friends as Mart, was an auto mechanic, m
an ager of several cotton gins, blacksmith, carpenter, electrician and a p
lum mer. He could work any arithmetic problem brought to hinm although h
is edc uation was cut short by having to work on the farm.
He was a Mason for 40 years, and Elder in teh First Christian Chur
ch in B ay City, Texas for 38 years. Severed on the school board many year
s, serv ed in World War II, and attended Texas university for traini
ng in Auto Mec hanics.
Martin was the one who was always called on to help "Lay Out" corp
se s. In Rogers, Texas, in the olden days there was no undertaker and cert
ain ly no funeral home. Often coffins were hand made by neighbors. It w
as ne cessary to place loths wet with water and camphor over the fac
es of the de ad to keep them from turning dark.
