Ellen was born in 1834 in Green Co., Kentucky.1 Ellen's father was Thomas E. Underwood and her mother was Elizabeth Ann Druin. Her paternal grandparents were Hiram Underwood and Celia Buley. She had seven brothers and six sisters, named William Thomas, Rev., John, Andrew Jackson, Samuel Druin, George Durrett, James D., Benjamin Owens, Frances, Catherine Ann, Clarissa, Jane, Mary E. and Sarah M..
