Cleburne, May 5 (Spl) - Funeral services were held at Dillon Funer
al Ho me here Wednesday for James Macom Senter, 65 North Texas oil operat
or a nd former resident of Fort Worth, who died at his home here Tuesday a
ft er a year's illness.
Senter who lived at 2526 S.Hemphill in Fort Worth for many years, w
as bo rn in Tyler, the son of Thomas H. ad anna Martin Senter. He was a d
escend ant of Gen. Andrew Jackson, and his father's cousin, Dewitt
Senter, was the first governor of Tennessee after the Civil War.
He was reared in Ellis County and carried one of the first rural mail ro
ut es in Texas, from about 1898, when the Postoffice Department inaugurat
ed t his service until1908. He began developing oil leases in
1918, maintaining headquarters at various times in Fort Worth, Tyler, Gr
ah am, and other centers of oil activity. He was associated with B . J. J
ohn son of Cleburne, organizer of the Hog Creek Oil Company, which they l
at er sold to the Magnolia Petroleum Company in one of the largest oil pro
per ty transacations of the time.
He and his associates developed producing leases in Eastland, Coleman, W
ic hita, Archer, Rusk, Limeston, Jack and Young Counties and for two yea
rs w as in the flour milling business at Burleson.
He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Laura Thompson, whom he mar
ri ed at Alvarado March 12, 1905; two daughters, Mmes. John Koch and Al
fr ed H. Steinman Jr., both of Milwaukee; four brothers, M.H. a
nd A. M. of Al buquerque, T . H. of Wichita Falls, and Carl C. Senter of F
orney, and fi ve grandchildren. Burial was scheduled in Glenwood Cemete
ry at Alvarado.
