Mahalah was born on January 10th, 1854 in Perry Co., Kentucky.1 Mahalah's father was James Monroe Ritchie and her mother is Hannah Fugate. Her paternal grandparents were Alexander Crockett Ritchie and Elizabeth Susan Grigsby. She had ten brothers and four sisters, named Martin Washburn, Francis, Gabriel, Alexander Crockett, Andrew, Samuel, Zackariah, John, James Crockett, Joshua, Elizabeth, Tabitha, Hannah and Martha.
