His paternal grandparents were Samuel Purcell and Ann Brewer; his maternal grandparents were Benjamin F. Smalley and Mary Liggett. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Benjamin, Aaron L., Peter Reisinger, Daniel Elisah, Calvin, Noah, Rachel Marie, Sarah Ann and Rebecca. He had four half-brothers and a half-sister, named William Charles, Corneilus, Charles McLain, M. I. and Elizabeth.
