Mahola's father was David Preston and her mother was Sallie (Sarah) Berry. Her paternal grandparents were Moses Preston and Ana (Sparkey) Amos. She had five brothers and three sisters, named William M., David, Jr., Edward, John, Jubal, Margaret, Rachel and Renee.
