His maternal grandfather was Moses David Skaggs and his maternal grandmother is Elizabeth Larimore. He had five brothers and six sisters, named James G., John L., John Thomas, William Lewis, Daniel Robert, Elizabeth S., Eliza Jane, Mary Ellen, Sarah Frances, Martha Ann and Lou Catherine.
