Her paternal grandparents were William (Bill) Kirkland and Sarah Smith; her maternal grandparents were Hugh Smith and Elender (Ellen) Browning. She had a sister named Mary Etta. Sarah Ellen (Kirkland) Basham died at her home about three miles north
ea st of Grandview, Texas on October 23, 1919. She was the mother of six y
ou ng children. A strain of flu had swept the country during this ti
me in his tory. Sarah had nursed her own family through this sickness t
he previous y ear before she became ill herself on Sunday October 19, 191
9. Her flu sick ness probably developed into pneumonia and a doctor was ca
lled on Thursd ay October 23rd. It was very muddy and Dr. Calvert Croop ar
rived on horseb ack about 2 PM. He recognized the seriousness of her sickn
ess, gave h er a shot of some type, and then left. Sarah became gravely i
ll later th at day and passed away about 5 PM on Thursday. She was buri
ed by her griev ing family in the Old Grandview Cemetery on the followi
