Under his leadership the Keahey Clan moved to  Rockwell, Texas in 1880.
From Keahey Clansmen Revisited: His hands were mangled in a gin mill acc
id ent. He was a cotton planter, and had many slaves. When the Civil W
ar ca me on and Mississippi River ports were closed, he went back in the s
wam ps and had built a huge platform on which he stored the cotton he c
ou ld no longer ship for sale. He had a shop in which he made guns for t
he Co nfederacy, and it was also well hidden in the swamps. Sherman ca
me to h is plantation and searchd, but they never found eithr the cott
on or the g un shop. After the war, when he could sell his cotton, it w
as bringing hi gh prices being a canny Scotsman would accept no pay but go
ld.
In the town of Rockwell there were no banks so people would come to J
.R .J for loans. He kept his gold in a big secretary in the livingroo
m. He se erved as the banker for the whole community.
J.R.J was killed by being crushed by his startled team of horses lung
ed fo rward and the loaded wagon caught him against a tree, when he we
nt to t he lot to cut wood.
