Marriages Of Kanawha County Virginia By Julia Wintz
Info From Jim Richardson Correspondence
Pleasant Basham and Lucy Ferrell, the parents of Elizabeth (Lathe) Ba
sh am Karl, were married on December 4, 1846. This event took place in Kan
aw ha County,Virginia. Pleasant must have had a sentimental streak, bec
au se his parents were alsomarried on December 4.
All of the available information on Pleasant says that he was born in a
bo ut 1810. Jhus,he was 36 years old when he married Lucy. There is no re
co rd of him before that time.
The 1850 Census, for Boone County, lists Pleasant, Lucy and their fam
il y. Arminta (Mintie) is three and Lethe is seven months old. They had o
ne a dditional child, Sylvester born in July of 1854.
In a deposition, given in 1926 for the pension application, Lathe s
ay s, "I do not have any brothers living. I have a sister but I have not h
ea rd from her in the last 16 years and I do not know whether s
he is de ad or not. She was living in South Bend, Indiana when I last hea
rd from he r. She married a man named John Moose. My only brother, Sylvest
er Basha m, died some thirty years ago".
There is a copy in the file of a deposition that her sister, Mint
ie L. Mo ose, gave in 1900.
Lucy passed away on July 10,1856. She was thirty-seven years old. a
nd th ey lived on Big Cole River, in Boone County. She was the daught
er of Chris tie and Mary Ferrell, and was born in Monroe County on June 3
0, 1819. T he name of the river, on which they lived, is either Big Co
le or Big Coa l. Coal is probably correct, however I'll use Cole since th
at is the spell ing in the early records.
The file on the Ferrell's is one of the more voluminous that I have, ho
we ver it does not contain a lot of helpful information. I have correspo
nd ed with more people concerning the Farrell's, than about any other fam
il y, but Christie and Mary did not leave much of a trail.
A book entitled "Old Tenth Legion Marriages" was compiled by a Har
ry M. S trickler, and was published by Joseph K. Ruebush Company in Dayto

om 17 78 to 1816. It contains a listing for the marriage of Ferral, Christ
o. a nd Mary Ferrel, daughter of William. The marriagetook place in 1796.
