His paternal grandfather was Peter DeSpain and his paternal grandmother is Unknown Possible Granddaughter; his maternal grandparents were Hezekiah Warren and Mary Polly Skaggs. He had five brothers and four sisters, named John William, Lindsey Hezekiah, Alfred Thomas, Alonzo, Ezekiel Z., Mary Susan, Nancy Ann, Malinda J. and Movenia.
