CANNON, BRAYTON'S POSTMASTER, DIES
Lifelong Resident of Brayton Community; Had served as Postmaster 20 years.
John W. Cannon, 70, Brayton postmaster 20 years, died Saturday at 1
1: 30 p.m. at his home there following a lingering illness.
Mr. Cannon was stricken with influenza a few days ago. He had be
en s uffering from complications of heart disease for more than a year. H
is wi fe's death occurred a few weeks ago.
Born on Farm
He was born on a farm near Brayton on Feb. 10, 1867, a son of t
he la te John W. (should be George W.) and Harriet B. Cannon. He gr
ew to you ng manhood in Brayton and was married April 23, 1889 at Atlant
ic to Hann ah M. Simpson. They farmed near Brayton until 1900, when th
ey locat ed at Oakfield, where Mr. Cannon served as a rural mail carrier f
rom 19 03 to 1906. He received his appointment as Brayton postmaster in 1
917, a nd held that position until his death.
He was active in community affairs, had been a member of the 100F l
od ge 46 years and secretary of the school board for 30 years.
Mrs. Cannon's death occurred January 11. Surviving are 6 child
re n, as follows; James S. Cannon, Menlo; Mrs. Dolly Sayers, Ottumwa; Mr
s. Lu cille Lewis, Randolph, Nebr.; George W., Gerald T. and Hilda Canno
n, Brayt on. Other survivors include four grandchildren, a brother Fra
nk Quensn el of British Columbia and two sisters, Mrs. Allie Ordway of Bra
yton and M rs. Clarissa Basham of Exira.
Services Tuesday
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Brayton Bap
ti st Church, the Rev. Claude W. Cooper, pastor of the Atlantic Methodi
st Epi scopal Church officiating. Burial was at Oakfield.
