Meredith A. Bassham 
Meredith A. was born on November 24th, 1805 in Virginia.1 Meredith A.'s father was Uriah Basham and his mother was Rhoda Simmons. His paternal grandparents were William Basham and Sarah Sally Shrewsbury; his maternal grandparents are Charles Simmons and Frances Meador. He had three sisters named Mary, Miranda C. and Patty. He was the oldest of the four children. He died at the age of 69 on April 2nd, 1875 in Greenfield, Greene Co., Illinois.1 General Notes

Meredith Basham was born in the "Old Dominion" and emigrated to Tenne
ss ee at an early day and became a well-to-do farmer, but in consequen
ce of h is inability to say "No", went security to such an extent th
at he became e mbarrassed and lost nearly everything he had, and to bett
er his fortune em igrated to this state (Illinois), first locating in Madi
son County; remain ed two years, then moved to Jersey, where he farmed abo
ut ten years; th en went to Macoupin County, where he bought him a farm a
nd lived eight yea rs; then sold out and moved to Greenfield, bought the f
arm now owned by Sm ith Lemasters, where he lived until he died, which occ
