James Monroe, Jr. was born on August 12th, 1817 in Lawrence Co., Tennessee.1 James Monroe, Jr.'s father was James Monroe Bassham and his mother was Arta M. Holloway. His paternal grandparents were Archibald Basham and Winna Jons. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Johnson J., John Anderson, Katherine, Elizabeth Elenor, Mary and Artimissa (Margaret). He was the second youngest of the seven children. He died at the age of 72 on September 2nd, 1889 in Lawrence Co., Tennessee.1 General Notes

James Monroe Bassham was a merchant and a blacksmith in the Sugar Cre
ek Co mmunity where Giles and Lawrence Counties Tennessee border. He did n
ot par ticipate in the Civil War, but stayed homed to blacksmith for the f
armer s. His business records, which were available in 1966, reflected th
at he w as a competent bookkeeper and businessman for his day. He was a me
mber a nd one of the founders of the Mt. Zion Methodist Church on Sugar Cr
eek, ha ving donated a portion of the land and assisted in the constructi
on of t he church building. It is said that the builders burned their nam
es into t he heavy timbers of the church steeple, and that James Monroe Ba
