William Blane Basham was born April 5, 1828, then in Giles County, Virg
in ia -- now Summers County, West Virginia. He enlisted in the Confedera
te S tates Army in 1861, and served in General McCausland's Brigade und
er Capta in George. William was a brave soldier, and fought in many battl
es of t he Civil War, 1861-1865. He was married three times. His first wi
fe was M argaret Peters, his second Julina Lilly, and his third, Bettie Co
oper. Th ere were no children of the third marriage. Uncle Billy was an e
xcellent f armer, having farmed in Mercer, Summers, and Wyoming Counti
es of West Virg inia. He had a large farm on Ellison Ridge which includ
ed the Panther Kno b. He was honest, patriotic, and a loyal citize
n. He died August 20, 191 4, at the age of eighty-six years. "Historic
