Joseph E. was born on December 1st, 1859 in Kingston, Maidson Co., Arkansas.1 Joseph E.'s father was John Bassham and his mother was Elizabeth Roper. His paternal grandparents were John Basham and Elizabeth Finley. He had two brothers and three sisters, named John William, Thomas G. W., Malissa Jane, Eliza Ellen Eveline and Josephine Elizabeth.
