Jesse Dewey (Joe) was born on June 5th, 1899 in Rockwall, Rockwall Co., Texas.1 Jesse Dewey (Joe)'s father was John Henry Basham and his mother was Texas Ann Tennessee Sellers. His paternal grandparents were William Jonathan Basham and Loanzi Adelade Drummond. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Ottie Wesley (Jimmy), Addie Ruth, Birty Lou Helen and Fay. JESSE DEWEY BASHAM Passed on quietly from us in the early morning h
ou rs of November 27, 1994 at the earthly age of 95 years. He is surv
iv ed by his younger sister, Fay Rodgers of Rockwall, Texas; two sons, Wil
li am D Basham Sr of Baton Rouge, Louisiana,and Donald J Basham of Colfa
x, Ca lifornia, and their families consisting of eight grandchildren a
nd 12 gre at grand children. He was preceded in death by three wives, Dudl
ey, Reet a, and Jeanette and a son, Grant Squires. He was born on Ju
ne 5, 1899 in R ockwall, Texas.
His early occupations included being a barber and selling barber and be
au ty supplies in Shreveport, Louisiana. As a sideline, he sharpened cut
ti ng instruments, including surgical scalpels. It was in 1946 that he be
ca me a repairman for the Friden Calculator Company, in Dallas, Texas. L
at er he traveled the United States as a "trouble shooter" for Friden a
nd w as their premier instructor at the factory in San Leandro, Californ
ia f or many years. The Singer Company acquired Friden in the 1970's and w
hen s omeone in personnel discovered that he was still working full ti
me at t he age of 75, they insisted that he "retire". As a "retired" emplo
ye e, he was allowed to continue on a part-time basis, which meant th
at he wo rked a 39 hour week for five more years, until the age of 8
0. He beca me a Master Mason in Concord Lodge No 117 of Sacramento, Califo
rnia in 19 77 and later achieved Thirty Second Degree status as well as be
coming a Sh riner. Most recently, he was a member of the Bicentennial Dayl
ight Lod ge No 830. He was also active in the Eastern Star and was sched
ul ed to be installed as Worthy Patron of the Naomi Chapter in Sacram
en to on November 29, 1994. He appeared on the television series "Love Con
nec tion" as their oldest contestant at the age of 90. He consistently bro
ug ht a smile to everyone he encountered and his memory will be lovingly c
her ished by family and friends alike. Masonic Grave side service wi
