J. E. Basham, who was stricken with paralysis about a year ago, di
ed at h is home east of town last Saturday at 3 p. m. When Mr Basham w
as first st ricken it was thought impossible for him to live but a few day
s, but aft er suffering all the agonies of a severe stroke of that dread
ed afflictio n, he recovered sufficiently to go to the best health resor
ts of Texas a nd Arkansas, where he remained for several months in the ho
pe of complete ly regaining his former health and vigor. But all his effo
rts and all th at the best medical skill could do was in vain, for the dre
ad malady had l eft him maimed and crippled for life. Mr. Basham had be
en a deputy sheri ff here for several years and was well known througho
ut this and adjoini ng counties. He was born in Red River County, Texa
s, July 31, 1854, and w as married to Nancy Stacks in 1873. He leaves fi
ve children. The remai ns were interred in Willow View cemetery Sunday, J
une 17, at 3 p. m., Re v. Florence performing the last sad rites. Newspap
