His paternal grandparents were William Basham and UNKNOWN Elizabeth; his maternal grandparents were George DOWELL and Margaret \\. He had nine brothers and three sisters, named Bartlett, James, Micajah, Henry Dowell, Joseph Dowell, Frederick, Allen Dowell, Francis (Frank), Francis Marion, Margaret, Margaret and Margaretha.
