His paternal grandparents were Obediah Basham and Celia Dowell. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named William Francis, Micajah, Daniel James, Allen Dowell II, Luther D. (Seth), Robert Houston, Samuel Logan, Mary B. and Paulina Ellen. He was the fifth oldest of the ten children. He had four half-brothers named George Washington, Joseph Dempsey, Thomas McClellan (Tom) and Barksdale P..
