His paternal grandparents were Nathan Basham and Anna Miller; his maternal grandfather was Alonzo Powers and his maternal grandmother is Mary Nelson. He had seven brothers and a sister, named Harry Edward, Alton Wesley (Pat), Floyd Mason (Dutch), Richard Alvin (Dick), Clyde Clelles (Slim), William Alonzo (Bill), Ralph Nathan (Red) and Mary Valentine.
