George Leftridge Basham (Omer R. Weaver Camp, U.C.V., of Little Rock, A
rk ., pays tribute to its late Commander.)
George Leftridge Basham was born on March 24, 1848, near Clarksvil
le A rk and died at his home, in Little Rock, on the 19th of November, 1
91 4. He was a son of Oliver and Martha Payne Basham. His father, a galla
nt C onfederate soldier, killed in the battle of Pilot Knob, Mo., was Trea
sur er of the State of Arkansas at the time of his enlistment. When abo
ut fift een years of age, Comrade Basham enlisted in the Confederate servi
ce in Ca ptain Comb's company, J. F. Hill's regiment, which was first in G
eneral Ca bell's brigade and afterwards transferred to the brigade of Ge
n. John S. R oane. He served to the end of the war and was paroled at Mars
hall, Texa s, on May 21, 1865.
After the war he prepared himself for the duties of civil life, gradua
ti ng from St. John's College at Little Rock, and then studied law, bei
ng adm itted to the bar in November, 1873. He became a member of this Ca
mp in 18 98 and was its honored Commander at the time of his death. As a s
oldier Co mrade Basham was true to the cause he had espoused, prompt in t
he dischar ge of his duties, and fearless in defending the right. His frie
ndship a nd love for his old comrades were always apparent, and his connec
tion wi th this Camp as member and Commander has been one of encourageme
nt and a b enediction.
We mourn a true friend and an upright and useful citizen; there
fo re be it RESOLVED, That in the death of Comrade Basham this camp h
as be en deprived of the presence and counsel of one who was ever ali
ve to its i nterests and always willing to make sacrifice to promote its w
elfare; h is associates, of one who was genial and cordial in his intercou
rse with t hem, contributing the best that was in him for their pleasure a
nd entertai nment; the State, of one who was true to his duties of citizen
ship and loy al to her authority and the demands made upon him; the leg
al professio n, of one who never betrayed his trust and who never dishonor
ed his profes sion; and his Church, of one who was devoted to the cau
se of religion a nd humanity and to the promotion of peace and good will a
mong men on eart h.
