It is believed that the Hirzel families migrated to the villages of
Pfaffikon in the parish of Pfaffikon and Winterthur, east and north of
Zurch, from their homeland about nineteen miles south of Zurich in the
village of Hirzel, which is on the top of a low mountain which forms the
western coastline of Lake Zurich. This is known as an area anciently
inhabited by lake dweller, "Pfahl-bauer", a people who built dwellin
pilings along the lake shores, who were subsequently absorbed into the
succeding races of nomadic and warlike Celtic and Helvetic tribes.   In
time, these tribes in this secluded location established numerous
progressive villages, and it is out fo this background that our ancestores
emerged.
The turmoil of the Thirty Years War severely depopulated the Palatinate,
and Swiss families were invited to settle in the area. Of the Swiss
families arriving in the area of Riehen after the war were at least sev
Hirtzel families from the parishes of Winterthur and Pfaffikon in the
canton on Zurich, Switzerland who settled in the Baden villages of Reihen,
Bretten and Kirchardt. We now know that children and grandchildren of
these Swiss settlers were later colonist in Louisiana and lPennsylvania.
The first Hirtzels arrived in the Reihen area in the Spring of 1651.
Jacob is shown in Pfaffikon from 1603-1609, then in Hachfalden in Hittn
in 1610-1611, then in Balm in 1614-1621. All of the villages and parish
are in an area six miles around Pfaffikon, which is a village in the
parish of Pfaffikon.
The name Hirzel is very well known in Zurich where eleven of them have
served as the burgermeister or mayor.
