Floyd, the youngest son of John Bassett, married Jane Freeman on October 31, 1859. He and his first cousin, Thomas Jefferson Bassett, son of Richard Bassett, Jr., both went to the Civil War on March 4, 1862.
Floyd was killed at Perryville, Kentucky October 8, 1862. Thomas was with him, wrapped him in a blanket and buried him. Floyd and Jane's only child was born after Floyd's death. The baby was named Floyd Richard, born ca. 1863. Jane later married Thomas and they had 12 children. (In 1910, the census records show Jane had 15 children, 10 living at the time of the census).
