Sir Roger's wife's father was killed at the Battle of Lewes in 1264,so Roger inherited his lands and titles, including the honour of Appleby and the Hereditary Sheriff of Westmoreland. He fought for Edward I against the Welshand drowned in his armor during the fighting in 1282.
In 1270, while his father was on Crusade, Roger substituted for him temporarily as Justice of the Forests.
