His paternal grandparents were Mathias Gayhart I Young and Nancy Sarah Hickman. He had two brothers and eight sisters, named Marshall Lanis, Robert Marion, Mary M., Sarah Agnes, Emily Catherine, Nancy Jane, Ann Elizabeth, Aletha Ellen, Alice C. and Harriet A..
