# Note: Patentee, shareholder and managing director of the Mines Royal in Keswick, Cumberland 1564; 1579 lease of the mines together with Customer Smythe. Daniel was apprenticed to the Wieland Company , where he was trained in Gastein-Rauris/Austria in the business of copper and silver mining and the trade with precious metals. He had a house and property in Augsburg, where his family lived during the time of his absence from Augsburg. After the Wielands had retreated from Gastein, Daniel continued to work the mines on his own account and expanded across the range of the Tauern mountains to the valley of Obervellach in Carinthia/ Austria. . Before he settled permanently in England in 1572 he sold his property in Austria and his house in Augsburg. He kept the German spelling of his name for his lifetime, whereas his children changed the name to "Hechstetter".
