EDMUND FITZ ALAN, Earl of Arundel, son and heir, born 1 May 1285, in theCastle of Marlborough. His wardship was obtained by John, Earl of Surreyand Sussex, whose granddaughter he married. He was knighted, with Edward,the King's son, and many others, 22 May 1306. On 9 November 1306 he wassummoned to Parliament as Earl of Arundel, and took part in the Scottishwars of that year. On 25 February 1307/8 he officiated as Pincerna at thecoronation of Edward II. In 1316 he was Captain General north of theTrent. For a long time he was in opposition to the King, and was violentagainst Piers
Gaveston, who had beaten him in a tournament. However in 1321 he changed
sides, and married his first son to a daughter of Hugh le Despenser,being
thereafter one of the few nobles who adhered to the King. In 1323 he was
Chief Justiciar of North and South Wales. Warden of the Welsh Marches1325. Having been captured in Shropshire by the Queen's party, he was,without trial, beheaded at Hereford, 17 November 1326 in his 42nd year.He was subsequently attainted, when his estates and honours becameforfeited. His widow [who, in her issue was, in 1347, sole heir of herbrother John, Earl of Surrey and Sussex, and consequently of the greatfamily of Warenne] was
